Outdoor School for All Senate Hearing April 9 2024

April 10, 2024

By Raelynn Schuety

The Outdoor School For All bill had its moment in the spotlight at the Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee.

What an exciting day at the MN Senate! The Outdoor School For All bill had its moment in the spotlight at the Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee. The turnout from the public was fantastic, and the Senators had some encouraging things to say.

▪ Children today suffer from Nature Deficit Disorder
▪ Our 2 greatest resources are young people and outdoors – this bill brings the 2 together.

The bill was “laid over” meaning it is now in contention for a future move into conference committee and consideration for a vote into law and funding appropriation. It’s an exciting step forward for outdoor education in our state.
This gathering provided a great opportunity for advocates, representatives, and leaders in outdoor education to come together and show their support. It’s inspiring to see so many people working towards a common goal of giving our kids the chance to learn and grow in nature.

Improving Access to Outdoor School

Only 30% of Minnesota students are able to access outdoor school, and children of color and low-income families are less likely to have access to the outdoors and its benefits. This bill will provide crucial funding to help close the access disparity gap, while also preserving Minnesota’s outdoor legacy and providing enhanced educational and social outcomes.
