Honoring 40 Years of Leadership and Welcoming a New Executive Director

March 31, 2026

By Jessica Vance

A Lasting Impact on Wolf Ridge

For over fifty years, Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center has inspired curiosity, connection, and stewardship through immersive, hands-on learning in the natural world. This year marks an important moment in our history as Executive Director Pete Smerud retires after nearly 40 years of leadership.

Pete’s vision and dedication have helped shape Wolf Ridge into a nationally recognized leader in environmental education. Generations of students, educators, and families have experienced the power of learning beyond the classroom—exploring forests, lakes, and trails while building skills, confidence, and a lifelong connection to the environment.

Celebrating a Legacy: “A Ridge Well Traveled”

To honor Pete’s remarkable career, Wolf Ridge is hosting a series of events titled “A Ridge Well Traveled.” These gatherings provide an opportunity for our community to come together, reflect on shared experiences, and celebrate the lasting impact of Pete’s leadership.

Welcoming New Leadership

As we celebrate Pete’s legacy, we are also looking toward the future. We are pleased to welcome Vanessa Riegler as Wolf Ridge’s next Executive Director, beginning June 8, 2026.

Vanessa brings more than 20 years of nonprofit leadership experience in environmental education, youth development, and community engagement. Most recently, she served as Executive Director of the Aloha Foundation, where she led six educational programs serving more than 10,000 children, youth, and families annually.

Her leadership has been marked by strong organizational strategy, operational excellence, and a deep commitment to mission-driven work. She has successfully expanded community partnerships, strengthened financial sustainability, and supported program innovation—all while fostering inclusive, engaging learning environments.

Vanessa’s passion for connecting people with the natural world closely aligns with Wolf Ridge’s vision of “a classroom with no boundaries.” She brings a collaborative leadership style and a strong belief in the power of immersive, place-based education to inspire lifelong stewardship.

Continuing the Mission

While this transition marks the end of an era, it also represents an exciting new chapter for Wolf Ridge. With a strong foundation built over 50+ years and new leadership on the horizon, we remain deeply committed to our mission of inspiring people to understand, value, and care for the natural world.

We invite you to join us in celebrating Pete’s legacy and looking ahead to the future of Wolf Ridge.
