Concordia College proudly honors Peter “Smud” Smerud, Class of 1986, with the 2025 Called to Serve Award for his lifelong dedication to education, service, and environmental stewardship.
A Life Dedicated to People and Planet
Peter has spent nearly four decades shaping environmental education at the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in northern Minnesota. Under his leadership, Wolf Ridge became a national model for sustainability and outdoor learning, including the world’s first renovation project fully certified as a Living Building.
“Smud’s greatest accomplishment lies in every story that teachers, students, and colleagues would eagerly tell about him.”
Expanding Outdoor Learning for All
In 2025, Peter led the creation of the Outdoor School For All Act, ensuring every child in Minnesota can experience multi-day, nature-based learning. His work has inspired new environmental education programs internationally, from China to communities worldwide.
“Education guided by purpose can transform both individuals and society—and Smud shows us how.”
Mentorship and Lasting Impact
Peter has guided generations of students and fellows through immersive learning experiences and raised over $20 million to expand Wolf Ridge’s programs and field stations. In 2023, he became the first Minnesotan to receive the National Nature Center Leadership Award.
“Smud doesn’t just lead—he cultivates the leaders of tomorrow.”
Honoring a Legacy of Leadership and Service
With humility, vision, and purpose, Peter “Smud” Smerud demonstrates how education can foster lifelong impact. His dedication to service, leadership, and stewardship makes him a deserving recipient of the Called to Serve Award.
