For adventurous souls entering grades 8 – 9
Explore Isle Royale. Experience nature at its wildest. See Lake Superior in a new way. Learn new skills and make new friends. Face new challenges and be part of a team. Do things you never thought you could. This 2-week camp session is a great fit for campers looking to experience both the fun and energy of Wolf Ridge summer camp and the adventure of backpacking across Isle Royale National Park on Lake Superior, a wild place like no other in the world.
Arrive at Wolf Ridge on Sunday, enjoy a day of camp fun, then prepare to depart for the Isle on Tuesday. Spend Tuesday exploring and learning the stories of Grand Portage National Monument before boarding the ferry to the island on Wednesday. From there, campers will spend 7 days hiking across Isle Royale, experiencing the shores of Lake Superior, the forests, ridgelines, and wetlands of the interior, and perhaps, with a bit of luck, seeing the elusive moose of the island. After a week of backpacking, return to the Ridge for a week of camp fun, including adventure ropes, rock climbing, and campfires.
Designed to introduce campers to the world of backpacking, campers will hike several miles a day on Isle Royale National Parks remote trails. Campers learn how and what to pack, how to choose and set up camp, and cook delicious meals outdoors. No prior wilderness trip experience is required, but backpacking requires extra physical and mental grit, so come prepared to work and play hard! What to expect on a backpacking trip.
It’s easy to make new lifelong friends when you share adventures in the wilderness. Many campers return for future trips with us!
Wolf Ridge trips are lead by experienced wilderness guide/naturalists. Our trip leaders are professional wilderness travelers and are certified as Wilderness First Responders, and in CPR, and Wilderness Water Safety. Wolf Ridge trip leaders are also trained as naturalists, skilled in telling the stories of the wilderness landscape, from tree and animal identification to local history, and more.
