Tonight, Pete Smerud is in the Twin Cities to receive Finance & Commerce’s “Top Projects 2017” award. Judges for the award consider “the degree of difficulty, creativity in design, innovative construction techniques, cooperation among contractors and management, and sustainability efforts.” Congratulations to the design team at HGA Architects, construction partner Gardner Builders, all of the trade partners, and the donors who made Lakeview House possible!
Lakeview Staff House was built with sustainability at the highest level in mind. For the construction team, this project also served as a “practice run” for the next building on the list, the Margaret A. Cargill (MAC) Lodge. MAC Lodge is attempting full certification under the Living Building Challenge (LBC) standards. LBC is the most rigorous environmental standard in the world, and only 19 projects thus far have attained full certification. Using Lakeview as a practice run allowed the team to locate the most sustainable, local resources, and to refine processes and construction techniques. The staff house has now been occupied for over a year. Naturalists and teachers have space to gather as a community for meals, games, or socializing. The resulting community drives the enthusiasm and professionalism in teaching that Wolf Ridge has become known for. This beautiful, functional, and nature connected space feeds the souls of our staff as they learn and live sustainably during their year of graduate study.
