Fabulous Fall Geek Out: Fungus

September 30 @ 3:00 pm - October 2 @ 1:30 pm

$390

Spend a glorious fall weekend on the North Shore of Minnesota gaining hands-on experience and learning from experts in their field.

Workshops take place on the Wolf Ridge campus and surrounding areas, with lodging and meals provided. Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or just a curious learner, the experience is designed for lifelong learners who have a passion for the natural world. Participants select a single workshop for the weekend but will have an opportunity to connect with other workshop groups during meals and evening programming.

Workshop: Fungus

Have you ever wondered why some wood turns blue when it rots? Or where all the dead leaves go after each autumn? Or what the moldy cheese in the back corner of your fridge drawer has to do with climate change?  In this weekend workshop, we will answer these questions and more as we explore the world of Northwoods fungi: who they are, what they do, what they taste like, and why they are important not only to our local forests but also to the global climate system. In doing this, we will hike and foray through different ecosystems at Wolf Ridge, learn how to identify mushrooms and other fungi out in the woods and fields, and hopefully find a tasty snack or two along the way!

Instructor: Lang DeLancey

Lang DeLancey is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Minnesota studying mycology and ecosystem ecology. Their research focuses on how fungi, both living and dead, drive soil carbon storage, soil fertility, and nutrient recycling in northern forests in response to anthropogenic climate change. Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, they’ve spent their life wandering through the northern forests canoeing, singing, and looking for tasty fungi.
