August 10 - August 15, 2008Give your grandchild the priceless gift of your time as you explore Minnesota's northwoods in winter with them. Through hands-on activities and outdoor discovery, you'll learn about tracking North Woods animals, orienteering, winter and lake ecology (including ice fishing). Immerse yourself in cultural history as you practice native skills, meet visitors from the past, and hop on a dogsled. Also experience snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, an Adventure Ropes course, and indoor climbing wall. Enjoy a family folk dance on the final evening. Free time options include crafts and games, astronomy, and naturalist presentations. Most classes are shared with grandchildren, a few sessions are separate.

Build lasting memories through hands-on activities while exploring for animals, becoming French voyageurs or practicing Native American skills. Learn the ecology of forests and streams, and hone your map and compass skills. Hike to spectacular overlooks, paddle a canoe under stunning cliffs, make fire with flint and steel, sing around the campfire. Try our high ropes challenge course and indoor rock climbing wall. Dance away the final evening at our family folk dance.

www.elderhostel.orgNOTE: These programs are for Elderhostlers and their grandchildren aged 8-12 years (one or two children per hosteler). Accommodations are shared with grandparents, each family sharing one room. The lodge has an open spacious lobby and simple bedrooms with bunkbeds and a private bath. Gandparents and their grand children share rooms. Meals are served cafeteria style. Most classes are outdoors and active, regardless of weather. Rugged trails include elevation changes of several hundred feet. Grandparents are responsible for child supervision.
